The Junction Triangle has evolved into a Toronto neighbourhood that boasts a tight-knit community with a small-town vibe. And that spirit is well represented at TuckShop Kitchen. Located at 1640 Dupont St (entrance on Edwin Ave), the sandwich shop and convenience store opened its doors in late 2015.
Co-owner Robb Eng first rented out the Dupont storefront to Urban Gardener earlier in 2015, while spending the rest of the year renovating the garage into what would become TuckShop. It has quickly become a staple of the area, a friendly and welcoming hub that brings a country feel to the city.
“We want to know who they are, we want them to get to know us,” Robb says of TuckShop's customers. “We want to be one of the heartbeats of the Junction Triangle.”
General manager Jake Taylor joined the TuckShop team after nearly 10 years working in fine dining establishments across Canada and the UK. The Newfoundland native felt right at home in the neighbourhood, and embraced the slower-paced, community feel of the area. Jake especially enjoys when the lunch rush is over; customers often stay to chat and tell stories. And thanks to all the small businesses springing up, a loyal clientele has already developed.
“We may not know your name, but guaranteed I know, if you’ve been here a couple times, what you’re having for lunch,” Jake says.
